Self care is not just about eating healthy, exercising regularly and pampering yourself. Self care can be many things. It involves taking care of your mind, body, soul and holding yourself accountable for the way you treat yourself and the people you allow into your circle. Self care is so important because we teach others how to treat us and when we neglect ourselves mentally, physically and emotionally, it effects everything in our life.
Self care is not selfish, it is a MUST. You can’t pour from an empty cup and if you’re not good to yourself first, you’re no good to anyone. We neglect ourselves because we are so concerned about securing the bag, achieving our goals, caring for others and providing for our family. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those things but when you forget to take care of you, there can be many consequences for your mental and physical health. Don’t forget to take those vacation days, take a break and unwind, go out on a date etc. The “little” things make a huge difference. Here are four self care tips:
Be Kind To Yourself
The love, encouragement and compliments that you so freely give to others, kindly give to yourself. You spend the most time with yourself and you need to be aware of what you are feeding your mind. The world does a great job at beating you down, you don’t need to do it too. Find positive affirmations and recite them every morning, make it a daily routine. Believe in yourself, forgive yourself and fall in love with yourself.
“Be you, love you. All ways, always.” – Alexandra Elle
Do More Of What You Love
Stop using “I don’t have the time” as an excuse. Yes, 24 hours isn’t always enough but it’s what you have and you must find a way to make it work. Life is short, don’t waste the time you’ve been given by merely existing. Waking up every morning, getting dressed, going to work, coming home drained and then doing that on repeat 5 days a week is NOT LIVING. Make it a priority to do something you love at least once a month and then gradually increase it to 2, 3 times a month.
Life is not meant to be some survival game, it should be enjoyed. It is all about balance, you should play just as hard as you work. When you genuinely enjoy your life, you are more appreciative and realize that life is truly a gift.
“Your life will be what you make it. If it’s important to you, you will find a way.”
Take A Break
Many of us are overworked and we use "I have bills, loans to pay off, a family to provide for and a lifestyle to sustain" as excuses. You may want to argue that it's reality and not excuses but I call it like I see it.
Is everything really going to crash and burn if you take a few days off or end work early two days a week? Yes, time may be of the essence but your health is your wealth. The family that you're busting your butt off for, you can't support from the grave. You need to ensure that you are getting adequate rest, eating properly and pouring into your cup and not just your career. It is important to prioritize time to feed your mind and body.
Be Mindful Of Your Circle
Your associations help determine the quality of life that you will have. The saying, “you are like the 5 people you spend the most time with” speaks volumes. If you are constantly surrounded by negative energy and people who you don’t admire and wouldn’t want to trade places with, it’s time to get a new circle. The people around you should be adding value to your life. Don’t be afraid to cut people off, you must choose your growth and what’s best for your well-being over seasoned friendships.
“When it comes to friendships, always choose quality over quantity.”
Self care involves knowing what you need and doing what is necessary to receive those things. It's time to start saying NO to anything that hinders you. No one on this earth knows what you need more than you so define what self care means to you.
